Description:

Does your child bring their bird book to the dinner table?  Can they use 'estuary' in a sentence?  Does your child have a favorite marine biologist?  If you can relate to these parenting moments, then the Junior Naturalist program is probably a good fit; we love these types of kids and want to maximize their interest in the natural world.

This weekly after school program, for children ages 9 to 13, is a natural sciences based program that provides the runway for kids who cannot get enough Nature.  We provide outdoor activities, assignments, and opportunities to deeply engage their scientific minds.

Building on their classroom knowledge, we engage the participants with real-world questions, open-ended assignments, and unbiased discussions.  There is a strong emphasis on cooperation (not competition) and a focus on finding and supporting individual interests and talents.

We believe that our next generation of scientists will the lead way in economics, in leadership, and in fostering a higher appreciation of our natural resources.  We also believe that these young leaders will come from right here in the Lowcountry.

Schedule (we'll play in the rain and chilly temperatures, but we'll supplement/make up days with thunder or very cold weather):

September is on the Water!

Sept 4 - Crabbing and cast netting at JICP

Sept 11 - Explore the tide pools at Folly Beach, measure tides, look for shark teeth

Sept 18 - Learn about marshes (ie, play in the pluff mud)

Sept 25 - Visit the alligators and swamp creatures at Caw Caw Interpretive Center

October is in the Woods!

Oct 2 - Map and compass and Geocaching at JICP

Oct 9 - Daylight astronomy class (with cool take-home work for night time)

Oct 16 - Garden in a Cup - all about plants, dirt and winter gardening

Oct 23 - Predator and Prey - visit the zoo at Charleston Towne Landing

We meet at Half Moon on Folly Road or on Coleman Blvd for all camps - whatever is more convenient for you!
